Rock Lodge,Kenmore

This interesting, single storey building with a 2-stage circular tower was built in the early 19th century as a home for the Chinese concubine of Lord Breadalbane. Built in a Gothic style to look ruinous, its construction of rustic masonry with projecting stones and pointed openings must have made it a damp, dank place to live as many springs emerge from Drummond Hill above it.

There are other places that have a Chinese flavour around the Taymouth Estate including the Chinese Bridge, built so that his Lordship did not have to travel all the way into the village to visit Rock Lodge. There were also Chinese gardens, and the ball room in the Castle is called the Chinese Room because of the silk tapestries and paintings on the ceilings. Rock Lodge is classed a category B listed building and is now roofless and derelict. It is looked after by the Forestry Commission.
