Carnbane Castle was built circa 1564 by Red Duncan Campbell ‘the Hospitable’ as a fortified hall-house on the top of a spur of high ground on the north side of the river above the road. The name 'Carbane' is the result of a charitable act by said Duncan Campbell when he gave all his clothes to a passing beggar. When his wife saw him outside, white and naked she called him a white goose - in Gaelic "Carn Ban"! Now a ruin after being burnt down during a raid by McDonalds from Glencoe about 40 years later using fire arrows The horizontal gunloops together with the remains of a vaulted storage cellar and unvaulted kitchen are all that remain. There are wall foundations around the perimeter of the small court found to the south of the ruin.
